Six Tips for An Easy Move

Moving is stressful and a ton of work, we all know that. But there are a few things we can do to make life easier during the process. Well yes, hiring movers that pack everything for you is probably the easiest, but that costs a lot of money. So if you are fiscally careful like me or don’t trust other people to pack your stuff, here are some pointers:

  1. Get good boxes. Paying for them at UPS or Home Depot is one way, they are solid and stackable. However, liquor store boxes (pick them up for free) are great for books, as they are smaller and designed for heavy items. Grocery stores have good boxes for free as well. Ask for apple boxes. Best free box out there. Remember to go mid month to collect them though, as they run out near the end. Also many stores have a crusher these days.

  2. Wrap your breakables well. I would buy packing paper at Canadian Tire, it’s clean and you will need it for glasses and china. Use newspaper if you must, but it will mark your hands black. A well packed box is full, with no space for shaking. Fill it with paper so it’s nicely full.

  3. Take the bulbs out of your lamps, and take off the shades. This will protect your lamps.

  4. If you have movers, awesome. But take your valuables and liquids yourself in your car.

  5. Use cushions and pillows to protect your TV, computer and line the box with padding.

  6. Tape the wires to the electronic box they go with, so you can easily reattach them. Also take a photo of the back of your computer and TV/router for easy set up!

Happy packing!
