What are Man-Me-Downs?
I coined a phrase quite a few years ago; “Man-me-downs”. It comes from having a tech-savvy husband who loves to buy the latest technology. Cameras, recording devices, phones, stereos are all things he loves to buy. However as technology improves, he needs the better, newer model. Ta-Da, he passes on the older, still functioning items to his family. My children and I have all benefited from his love of the new. Currently my phone and my camera are a man-me-down from my husband.
What do man-me-downs have to do with my business as a downsizer, you might ask? Well, I currently have listed on Varage Sale an Eatons hand held video recorder, circa 1968, that my Dad used for years. It’s the first man-me-down! It comes complete with a leather case and a roll of film. But is is vintage, a collectors piece, or pure junk? Well, that depends on your market. In this world there are collectors for everything, and old technology is no exception. I know a lot of people who still use VHS tapes, and might need a recorder for their beloved collection, for example. We all know about the resurgence of the record store. Vinyl is back, baby!
The same stands with old monitors and computers. There are electronic refurbishment places that will take and resell or recycle old TVs, printers, computers etc. Here is a link for a place here in Victoria://bottledepot.ca/?page_id=789.
So please make sure you find a home for your old phones (there is a group that collects them to send to third world countries:https://medicmobile.org/phone-donations), cameras (nothing like an old film camera for the photo buff), your records and your CD’s. You never know who wants them!
Or if you are stuck, give me a call and we can work out the best way to get these wonderful items out of your home!
